LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is 1596 square kilometre in size. About 6,8 million people live there and slowly it grew into one of the world's major cities. London is divided in 33 Boroughs. The interior part is the only 2.7 square kilometre big City. The business city with the Bank of England, the stock mar­ket, the town hall, the royal opera house, Covent Garden and the St Paul's Ca­thedral. In the southeast of the city, at the end of the harbour, is the Tower of London with the Tower Bridge; in the southwest and west, is the goverment quarter with the Buckingham Palace, Downing and Regent Street, Traflagar Square, Westminster Abbey and the Parliament Buildings; in the east are the educational and the culture furnishings: the university, TU (trade union), the British museum, National Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum. There is the commerce and the industry position, the world harbour and the international air­ports, Heathrow and Gatwick.



The people who immers in this big metropolis, have not only the experience from these fascinating city, but at the same time the reflection of the British es­sence and of the English way to live. For example: The Londoner taxis, which there especially high roof, so that the gentlemans which there Bowler Hat's can get in comfortable. Or about the Speaker's Corner in the Hyde Park, where all the peoples can philosophize undisturbed over God and the world.

Each district in London have its own atmosphere. Different areas seem like dif­ferent cities. The West End is a rich man's world of shops, offices and theatres. The East End is the old working people's district, where there are many small flats and houses, some old, some new.

London is always changing. New buildings go up and old ones come down. Poorer areas become fashionable and people with more money move into them.

London offered everyone something: museums, parks, castles, pubs, markets, and, and, and .

The most famous sights are: The Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London. The Tower is east of the old town from London and northern of the Tower Bridge. It is the oldest building from London. It was used as royal residence and a prison until the nineteenth century. Now it holds the Crown Jewels of England and it is a major tourist attraction.

Who loves the view, enjoy well the lovely view over London from the dome of the St. Paul's Cathedral. But many visitors want to see the Houses of Parliament and the many magnificent museums. It is worth to see the Tate Gallery, the waxworks from Madame Tussaud's, the Rock Circus, the London Dungeon, the London Aquarium, the London Planetarium, the famous department store "Har­rowds", the Parliament with Big Ben and naturally the guard relief in front of the royal residence, the Buckingham Palace, too. In madame Tussaud's wax­work museum you can meet the most famous personalities from 200 years his­tory. The Rock Circus is like Madame Tussaud's with waxwork figures of the stars. Some of them are so lifelike, you want to talk to them. The London Dun­geon is in the middle of the centre from London. It is the possibly most terrible museum of the world. More of 2000 years of dreadful, authentic history, waked up to life in the London Dungeon or must we say they waked up to the death?

Where can you find the seas and the rivers of this world? Of course in the Lon­don Aquarium! There you can find an enormous variety at exotic creatures, how you can find only in dark blue of the ocean and in tropical rivers. From the deli­cate sea- horse to the dreadful shark, from the colored clown- fish to the poison­ous ball fish. You can observe the most exciting world of thousand spe­cies. The world most famous planetarium is the London Planetarium. It reveal the secrets of the cosmos. There you go through all the universe, and you learn very much with it.

London is a fashion metropolis, a trend factory and a pulsate city. Young people like to go to London because there is the latest fashion and there you can find everything. Even the crazyest fashion.

In London are many cafés:

The Fashion Café, where you can step in a world of glitter and glamours, in a world of the fashion and the super- models.

The Rainforest Café, where you can dive in in a wild world and have a meal in the rain forest.

The Hard Rock Café, where you can have a meal in a particulary atmosphere: between figures of the most famous rockstars.

The Planet Hollywood, where you can have a meal between movie and TV stars.

And of course many more

In London are a lot of pubs, too. They be open continuous, from Monday until Saturday. Some closed in the afternoon. The stay in a pub and the consumption of alcohol is allowed only when you be 18 years old.


History of London:

London was a small Roman town on the north bank of the Thames. Already in the 11th century it was an important commercial town. The river, Thames was crowded with ships, leaving for Java and Japan, New Zealand and New York. 1215 The Great Charter confirm the municipal privileges. In the 16th century, 1665 the plague and 1666 a enormous fire destroy whole London. But in the 18th and 19th century London develop itself fast again to the commercial, fi­nance and traffic centre of the land.
