The World is Changing

December 7th 1941, 7am. A peaceful Sunday morning. Nobody expected it, and everybody prayed it would never happen. But it did: Pearl Harbour was attacked by Japan. The one place in the entire United States where no one would've expected a bombing. U.S. Navy casualties were numbered at 2718, of which 2000 were dead. Six hundred army personnel were either wounded or dead. Approximately 1177 sailors were entombed in the U.S.S. Arizona. It was the biggest hit America ever had.

Sixty years later. history repeats itself.

September 11th 2001. Tuesday morning 8am. A plane crashes into one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. One hour later, the towers were no more. Over 3000 people died that day. "History only repeats itself because we do not learn from it"(Anon). America attacks Iraq and, once again, the world is in danger of yet another World War. The economy goes crazy, people protest other people's decisions, and opinions vary when it comes to what result these events will have on all aspects of the world.

Looking back on what has happened over the past two years, we have to ask ourselves. What was it all for? Is all of this really necessary. or worth it?

Leaving aside all the political problems, potential wars and the tragedies that have happened in the whole world in the past couple of years, we also have to acknowledge the way we are treating our planet. We're intoxicating 'her' with all our technology. Pollution is a big issue nowadays. Some people in South Africa are dieing of thirst because of it. We should thank God for the food on our tables when so many walk in hunger.

We think we're so smart just because we have an opposable thumb and we can talk. But we're not. We could use what we have for something better. but instead, we create guns, we create wars, we kill innocent people, we pollute, we kill animals just for fun, we hurt each other, we discriminate. we really should stop, look at what we've done and think about what we're doing.

The world is changing and it's not for the better! If we don't open our eyes and do something about it, we will, eventually, self-destruct, just like we did so many times in the past. The only thing I can do is speak up. The rest I leave in God's hands.
